Reitz Memorial High School officials broke ground Oct. 30 to officially start construction of the school’s new plaza, soccer stadium, and parking lot just west of the current campus. October marked the one-year anniversary of the start of the Capital Campaign, and much has happened in these past 12 months.  More than $5.7 million has been pledged from some 360 corporations and individuals – more than 90% of the Campaign’s stated goal of $6.0 million.

During the groundbreaking ceremony, officials announced naming rights to three projects in the campaign. The soccer stadium will be the Traylor Family Stadium; the parking lot will be the Witting Parking Lot; and the plaza will be the Koch plaza. Naming rights for the walkway, message board and other projects will be announced later.

Demolition has been completed on 1940’s era duplexes along Bennighof and Lodge avenues in Evansville to allow for the development.  Reitz Memorial President Brother Lawrence Murphy said, “This land-development project will be a great benefit to the school community and to the neighborhood around the school.  By bringing this additional parking onto our campus, we’re creating a far safer environment for our students and for visitors to the school.”

Expansion of the Memorial campus and facility renovations is one element of the $6 million Capital Campaign, which also will assist families with financial aid, and improve technology and educational programs at the school.

Plans call for all the physical improvements to be complete and ready for use in time for the 2014-15 school year.
