Strengthening The Local Mission Of St. Mary's, As Part Of A Statewide System

By Dan Parod And Jonathan Nalli

Since our founding, St. Mary’s has been singularly focused on providing local patients with the high-quality, compassionate and personalized healthcare they deserve. We’ve delivered on that mission through dedicated associates, physicians, providers and volunteers who are committed to delivering healthcare that works, healthcare that is safe and healthcare that leaves no-one behind.

As the healthcare landscape evolves, our ability to continue fulfilling this mission calls us to respond to the ever-changing needs of our patients and to ensure that we’re positioned to provide the best possible care going forward. That’s why we are excited to announce that St. Mary’s and St. Vincent – a partnership first established in 2012 – will further strengthen our integrated statewide system of care under the St. Vincent name.

As many readers likely know, St. Mary’s Health and St. Vincent—both part of Ascension—began to operate as one healthcare system in 2012. Since that time, we have worked diligently to create a stronger system with aligned clinical protocols to provide even greater patient care. As a result, our associates and physicians deliver broader clinical services with a continued, extraordinary emphasis on personalized, quality patient care. Now, as we unite under a single name to form a truly united healthcare system, we will continue to enhance access to advanced care for our patients that we are so privileged to serve.

By bringing together two of the state’s strongest healthcare systems under one name, local residents will benefit from exceptional local care that includes access to some of the best practitioners in medicine from anywhere in the country. Together, we will deliver the very best in personalized care for our patients.

As we march toward an official transition date later this April, our pledge—to our employees and to our patients—is to be crystal clear not only about how this transition will improve patient care, but also about our unwavering commitment to Evansville and the entire Tri-State community.

We see greater opportunity to further sharpen our focus, meet our patients where they are, and provide our patients with integrated access to a statewide health system with leading physicians, researchers and clinicians.

As St. Vincent, we will be one of Indiana’s largest and most advanced health systems, with 20 hospital locations, nearly 2,000 physicians and more than 400 total sites of care across the state. Our patients will have access to providers that are leading the way for the healthcare of tomorrow: transplant surgeons, open heart surgeons, a phenomenal heart hospital with some of the nation’s leading providers in heart care, best-in-class pediatric care at Peyton Manning Children’s Hospital at St. Vincent, along with renowned medical researchers.

We foresee even greater clinical integration, access to advanced care, and an increased connection between service providers across our network of care. And we see this integration as essential to advancing healthcare outcomes across the state of Indiana.

By unifying under the St. Vincent name, our patients in Indiana, Kentucky, Illinois, Ohio and beyond will experience a familiarity for all our services.  We will also be better positioned to share best practices from right here in Evansville. For example, conversations are already underway for how we might replicate in Indianapolis the award-winning Center for Children Feeding Clinic that started in Evansville.

Ultimately, our change from St. Mary’s to the St. Vincent Evansville name will help us clearly communicate the depth and breadth of these services as one integrated, statewide health system.

Even as we chart a future together, our age-old commitment to mission will remain unchanged.

St. Mary’s and St. Vincent share a rich history rooted in the work of the Daughters of Charity. With this shared identity and a commitment to serve the poor and the vulnerable, the underlying mission, vision and values that have guided St. Mary’s for generations will remain true – even as we expand the breadth of care we are able to provide.

Importantly, just as we have made a commitment to our patients, we’ve made a similar commitment to our employees. No positions will be lost as part of this transition, and there will be no changes to current benefits.

Our goal is simple: to respond to the needs of our patients and deliver the very best healthcare possible.

We consider it a privilege to be part of the Evansville community and we look forward to what we will advance together: a healthcare system dedicated to treating the body, mind and spirit of each of you, our patients.
